It would be a cruel fate indeed if Cruel Fate was the last Cainsville novella There are still stories to be finished Olivia Taylor Jones Gabriel Walsh and Ricky Gallagher are celebrating the release of supposed serial killer Todd Larsen from prison Larsen is Olivia’s recently discovered biological father Of course just because Todd was exonerated for the deaths for which he was convicted doesn’t mean he hasn’t killed The one absolutely no doubt killing that gives new meaning to a “he needed killing” killing Unfortunately someone has dug up that body along with his victim’s body and is dropping strong hints to the police that Larsen is responsible for both killingsOlivia Gabriel and Ricky are still the warmest and strongest of friends with Olivia and Gabriel becoming and settled Supporting one another compensating for one another’s weaknesses they complete one another They band together to fight for Todd’s continued freedom and his re introduction into the world Kelley Armstrong has the golden touch; her stories her characters and her fantasy world building based on ancient folklore are all addictive Of course Liv Gabriel and Ricky are still extremely ethically challenged Part of their charm dahlings I think I am extremely lucky that I didn’t discover the Cainsville series until the summer Rituals was published I would have gone insane waiting year to year for the books In Cruel Fate Armstrong lightly touches upon the gargoyle ending of Rituals; still one of the loveliest endings I’ve ever read The Fae roles of Liv Gabriel and Ricky are not a major part of Cruel Fate but Cainsville and its citizens are still present in the story still working their magic on the readersThank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review

Thank you NetGalley and Subterranean Press for this arcI have very much enjoyed the previous books in the Cainesville series but felt somewhat let down with this supposedly final story While the familiar characters were there in their familiar places most were just mentioned in passing It's only a novella not a full length book but I still felt cheated Also Cruel Fate left me with uestions than it answered Hopefully there will be and Ms Armstrong is just taking a break from her Rockton stories and will come back with Cainesville It was still a good read but just not as good as the full length Cainesville stories

To read of my reviews check out my blog at keikii Eats BooksShort Review Another Cainsville novella another happy me I love this series so much and I love all the novellas just as much My only wish is if I could have Gabriel and Olivia time but that was nearly the entire novella so I'm just greedyLonger ReviewI had a smile on my face the entire time I read this I love Cainsville I loved it from the moment I started reading the first book years ago I love the characters and I love the world and I love the story The smile was because once again I was able to reconnect with those friends I love even after the series was over I was so happyThe Cainsville novellas are like epilogues for the story that didn't need to happen but you love that it did Cruel Fate is the fourth Cainsville novella I've read and Kelley Armstrong has never let me down It is also the seuel to the events of the previous novella Rough Justice so if you haven't read that first you should I loved it the storyOlivia has managed to find enough evidence for Gabriel to get her dad out of prison She is hovering and she knows it but she is so happy to finally get him out She wants everything to go perfect But as you know it can't go perfect Gabriel is there to help her even when things go wrong Because of course things will go wrong They always doHonestly as much as I love that Olivia managed to do what seemed impossible I felt it got in the way Mostly what I wanted was Olivia and Gabriel together I love them so much So so much Even though most of the novella was about Olivia and Gabriel working and living together I wanted I'm just greedy that way It is just so cute I just want of their life The investigation just made me want of the couple than of the storyI have seen others say that this is the last novella If true it makes me sad because I want to see so much of Olivia and Gabriel's lives together But the story is already over this is just extras Extras I very very much enjoy I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review Thank you to Kelley Armstrong Subterranean Press and Netgalley for providing this copy for review

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book All thoughts and opinions are my own45 starsFirst thing this one cannot be read as a standalone you really need to read the entire series to understand this one since it does take place after the series is over That being said I'll still try to make this review as spoiler free as possible Okay Kelley Armstrong has an amazing gift with writing The way she creates characters and how they fit together is amazing Coming into this book with months between reading the last book I was still able to get into the groove and felt right at home The relationships between everyone are complex and so amazing to read about I still wish there was to the fae I feel like Olivia's main power with omens isn't used often nor do I always understand the guys' giftsI really liked this look into their life after the main issue has been resolved It shows that things are still having to adjust because of the conclusion but makes the story feel even real With her father out of prison I wonder if there will be a book featuring her mother coming up for appeal or anything I'm a huge fan of this series and I'm not ready to give it up I highly recommend this series to people who like thrillers with touches of magic and if you have read the series I do think this novella is worth the read I liked Gabriel and Ricky's POVs here

45 5 starsCruel Fate is a longer novella set after the final Cainsville book RitualsI adore Kelley Armstrong and I loved the Cainsville series so much I was thrilled that we got two novellas set after the final bookAnd Cruel Fate did not disappoint This story was wonderfulI was disappointed that we did not get to see what happened with Todd at the end of Rituals So I was thrilled to see a novella dedicated to himI missed Olivia Gabriel and Ricky so much And we get a lot of them in this storyCould you read this as a standalone? The author does recap a lot of stuff from the books So it seems like either 1this is a reminder to regular readers or 2 she is doing this in case people read this as a standalone Would I recommend reading this without having read the series? Absolutely not This is a complex world And I think that it would be somewhat confusing But I guess it would be possibleIf you love Cainsville then you will enjoy Cruel Fate It was amazing And it definitely did not feel like a novella to me It actually felt like it was pretty much another book It was substantial And it showed us an important part of the story that we were missing after Rituals

Hmm so my usual Kelley Armstrong caveat As a general rule I love her writing and characters so I like her books and am not a harsh judgeBut I was disappointed that some of the world details were wrong? view spoilerOlivia says Gabriel bought their cabin no she did And she mentions she only found 23rds of the gargoyles when the main series ended with her finding them all hide spoiler

Cruel Fate was a nice little exclamation mark on the Cainsville seriesThis novella provided a new danger but also gave the reader a glimpse of what Olivia's life looks like post the series She and Gabriel are comfortable in their relationship although will still find their struggles as good couples usually do Ricky seems set on his future destination and Olivia finally gets her father back after 20 yearsIf there was any criticism it was that the ending was a little bit anti climatic The idea of finding the hidden house was really good and shows just how many secrets there are left in Cainsville but it was under utilised I was counting down the pages and increasingly thinking 'how the hell is this going to be wrapped up' There was a little bit of filler with Ricky finding out something for a chapter and then a chapter spent telling that information to Olivia and Gabriel The second act seemed a bit too long for a novella such as thisBut I really liked the finality it brought Although it did make me miss the town of Cainsville and Olivia and Gabriel While this chapter of their lives is over I feel they have so much left This series was often spectacular and while I appreciated going back to visit my old favourites it did make me miss them a whole lot
